And, you know, I'd been working in films since I was about 10. RONAN: I think initially, when I read the script, I was still living at home. GROSS: Saoirse, I know that the story of "Brooklyn" has personal meaning for you. You've - you become something else, which is an exile, I suppose, for a while. And this book by Colm Toibin captures that sense of sort of displacement and Dublin-ness (ph) that you feel when you leave your country, which is that you're obviously not from the country that you are now calling home and - but equally, you're not from home anymore either. And because I had been over and back to London all the time, I didn't actually think I'd feel that. I did - I thought homesickness was - I don't know, I suppose I thought it was the preserve of unhappy immigrants who had to leave because of economic deprivation. And my relationship to Ireland changed fundamentally. And when I moved there, I was struck by how different the city seems when you actually move there, when you don't have a return ticket, as it were. I was offered a play at the National Theatre in London. GROSS: What personal meaning does this story have for you?ĬROWLEY: Well, when I was 27, I moved from Dublin to London to carry on directing plays. GROSS: John Crowley, Saoirse Ronan, welcome to FRESH AIR. Homesickness is like most sicknesses - it'll make you feel wretched, and it'll move on to somebody else. RONAN: (As Eilis) I wish that I could stop feeling that I want to be an Irish girl in Ireland.īROADBENT: (As Father Flood) All I can say is that it will pass. So when your sister wrote to me about you, I said the Church would try to help. It'll be three nights a week and I've paid your tuition for the first semester.īROADBENT: (As Father Flood) Why? Not thank you?īROADBENT: (As Father Flood) I was amazed that someone as clever as you couldn't find proper work at home. I've enrolled you in a night class for bookkeeping - Brooklyn College. JIM BROADBENT: (As Father Flood) I'd forgotten just how bad it feels to be away from home. She's talking with the priest, played by Jim Broadbent, who sees how homesick she is. Let's start with a short scene after Eilis has arrived in Brooklyn. Once there, she has to decide which life to choose - the familiarity and limitations of her hometown or the possibilities and unpredictability of America. Just as she's on the verge of starting a new life with him, she's called back to Ireland. But loneliness is unending until she meets a young Italian man at a dance. With the help of the Irish priest who sponsors her, she finds a room in a Brooklyn boarding house and a job in a department store. After a miserable voyage by ship, she arrives in New York, homesick and disoriented. "Brooklyn" is adapted from a Colm Toibin novel, set in the 1950s, about a young woman named Eilis from a small town in Ireland, who's encouraged by her older sister to cross the Atlantic to New York City where she might have a better future. Ronan was nominated for an Oscar at the age of 13 for her performance in the 2007 film "Atonement." She starred in the 2009 film "The Lovely Bones." In Wes Anderson's recent film, "The Grand Budapest Hotel," she played Agatha, the fearless and loyal girlfriend of Zero, the lobby boy. My guests are the director the new film, "Brooklyn," John Crowley, and the star, Saoirse Ronan.

They also traveled to Stockholm, Sweden, where they recorded additional vocals in Cheiron Studios. On the weekend of July 17 to 18, 1999, the band recorded vocals for the song in Battery Studios during their break from performing on the NSYNC in Concert tour in New York. Carlsson whistled the eventual melody of "It's Gonna Be Me", which caught Martin's attention and subsequently told him to include it in the track. In 1999, Max Martin, Andreas Carlsson, and Rami Yacoub resided in Key West, Florida, to write another single after NSYNC finished recording " Bye Bye Bye" (2000). "It's Gonna Be Me" was popularized as an Internet meme titled "It's Gonna Be May", after a Tumblr image of NSYNC member Justin Timberlake was posted in 2012 with the respective caption, which gained the attention of Barack Obama and Timberlake himself. NSYNC performed the song at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards and 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, and in three headlining concerts. "It's Gonna Be Me" also peaked at number one in Canada, and charted in the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart, New Zealand, and Sweden.Īn accompanying music video was directed by Wayne Isham, and depicts each NSYNC member as a doll inside a toy store attempting to be bought by a female customer. The song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) one month after its retail release. It was the only NSYNC song to peak at the number one position on the Hot 100. "It's Gonna Be Me" debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 42, where it eventually peaked at number one for two consecutive weeks. The pop track was inspired by Joe Jackson's " Steppin' Out" (1982) and Rupert Holmes' " Him" (1980), while the lyrics are about a man attempting to persuade a woman to start a new relationship together as she recovers from a previous breakup. The song was written by Max Martin, Andreas Carlsson, and Rami Yacoub, and produced by the latter. It was released through Jive Records, as the second single from their second studio album No Strings Attached (2000) in the United States, and as the third single from the international edition of No Strings Attached. " It's Gonna Be Me" is a song by American boy band NSYNC. The North American cover art is an animated cartoon of the NSYNC members (not pictured). On the latter point, if Maxon follows its usual annual release cycle, we’d expect ProRender to make its first appearance within Cinema 4D R19 next year.Īccording to Jancke, “We’ll be working over several release cycles to bring you more great features based on ProRender and fully support the fundamental feature set of Cinema 4D. The implementation looks likely to be in addition to C4D’s existing Physical Renderer, not as a replacement for it: Jancke comments that “we continue to believe that there’s a place for CPU rendering solutions”. On the former point, Jancke notes that ProRender currently supports “virtually all the physical rendering attributes you’d expect”, and that Maxon is working with AMD to “add key features”. It is not included with Prime, BodyPaint, or Cinema 4D Lite. Maxon’s announcement, which was posted by the company’s director of engineering, Karsten Jancke, doesn’t go into detail about how or when ProRender will be integrated into Cinema 4D. ProRender is included with Cinema 4D Studio, Visualize, and Broadcast. ”įeature list and release dates not yet confirmed While Blender’s Cycles engine – which forms the basis for Insydium’s upcoming Cycles 4D render plugin – is OpenCL-compatible, The Blender Foundation hasn’t always seen eye to eye with Apple over OpenCL.Īccording to Maxon: “ProRender will fully support Nvidia as well as graphics cards on Windows, and as the vendor of choice for Apple hardware, AMD is in the best possible position to support. ProRender is one of relatively few available OpenCL-compatible solutions. That means one based on the cross-platform OpenCL GPU computing framework, not CUDA, Nvidia’s proprietary alternative.Īlthough there are a number of existing third-party GPU renderers for Cinema 4D, the majority – including OctaneRender, Iray and FurryBall – are CUDA-based. With AMD’s GPUs the only discrete graphics cards offered in the Mac Pro – and now the new MacBook Pros – the company needs a GPU rendering solution that supports AMD hardware. In Maxon’s case, a key deciding factor will have been the popularity of Macs among its user base. One of the few cross-platform GPU-based rendering solutions While the former was co-developed by Corona Renderer creator Render Legion, the C4D implementation will be the first time that a major DCC tools developer has adopted ProRender as its native GPU renderer. The announcement is a significant endorsement for ProRender, which has been slowly gaining ground since its initial proof-of-concept release under the name FireRender at Siggraph 2014.Īn unbiased path tracer with the basic range of features you would expect in a physically correct renderer, ProRender now comes with plugins for 3ds Max, Maya, Rhino and SolidWorks. The first native implementation of ProRender The integration, which is being developed by both Maxon and AMD’s development teams, will be rolled out “over several release cycles” of the software. I know for a fact that ProRender won't compare in quality to Octane you can see it clearly in the renders they have shown but this is a good time to say that with many GPU contenders (cycles, redshift and now in R19 prorender) the Octane C4D department needs to step up (I always thought that one guy although talented doing all the work was just too much c'mon! the dude even does support in the forum and Facebook group!), there are things that flat out don't work in the plugin (like the liveDB search) and other things that need improvements for ease of use, there is one that's REAL simple that really used to bother me when I first got to Octane in C4D and that is the UI, it doesn't get rid of unnecessary menus when you switch to the Octane Tab like other renderers do.Maxon has announced that it is to adopt Radeon ProRender, AMD’s OpenCL-based render engine, for GPU rendering within Cinema 4D. Octane was built on CUDA so the fact that Otoy will make an AMD compatible version whenever they do it it's still amazing, I personally have never care for this and always thought that spending that time on development of real features was a better use of resources but who am I to say. Coral snakes never have black and red bands touching one another. These snakes look very similar to coral snakes, with the main difference being the pattern. Louisiana milksnakes have alternating bands that go: large red band, thin black band, thin white band, thin black band. That belief clearly isn’t true, and milksnakes are often found in barns because they like to eat the rodents that are also commonly found there. They get their name from the old belief that they milked cows since they were often found in barns. Milksnakes are members of the Lampropeltis genus, making them kingsnakes. The Louisiana milksnake ( Lampropeltis triangulum amaura) is a mimic snake that has an appearance that copies the venomous coral snake, although all milksnakes are harmless. Louisiana Milksnake Louisiana milksnakes are coral snake mimics found in east Texas. They are sometimes called the salt-and-pepper-snake due to how intense the speckled pattern can be. Speckled kingsnakes are characterized by their black body speckled with yellow dots, hence the name. Still, these snakes can be found in other locations and even overlaps territories with the desert kingsnake in some places. Their preferred habitat is swamps, rivers, and wetlands. They can grow to four feet in length and usually live near water. Speckled kingsnakes ( Lampropeltis holbrooki) are a subspecies of the common kingsnake that is uniquely native to eastern Texas. Speckled Kingsnake The speckled kingsnake gets its name from the distinct speckles across its body resembling salt and pepper. Some individuals have a very intense flecked appearance instead or in addition to their banding. They often have white or yellow rings traveling down their bodies, but the banding is less distinct than the eastern or western kingsnake. They can grow to four feet long but aren’t often seen.ĭesert kingsnakes are characterized by their yellow and black bodies. They were originally considered a subspecies of the eastern kingsnake but are now commonly identified on their own. Desert Kingsnake The desert kingsnake can be found across Texas, particularly in the desert regions.ĭesert kingsnakes ( Lampropeltis splendid) can be found in the dry, desert regions of Texas and the neighboring states. They often have yellowish bellies, giving them their other common name, the yellow-bellied kingsnake. Prairie kingsnakes are characterized by their brown or tan bodies with elliptical black spotting down their backs. As the king of snakes, kingsnakes will even eat venomous snakes and have a natural resistance to most venoms! With their harmlessness to humans and habit of eating more dangerous snakes, you should never kill a kingsnake. None of these snakes are dangerous to humans, but they get their name from their habit of eating other snakes. They are beautiful snakes and make for incredible generalists, allowing them to live in almost every environment in the New World. These snakes are found all over the New World (North and South America), with four primary species and forty-five subspecies. Kingsnakes are a nonvenomous group of snakes that belong to the genus Lampropeltis. There are six species of kingsnake in Texas, and by the end of this, you will be able to identify each of them. Today, we are going to take a look at a particular group of snakes in Texas known as kingsnakes. There are snakes in every single ecological niche in Texas, but not all of them are dangerous. One of the most prevalent groups of animals you can find in Texas is snakes. Texas is one big state!
